Reformed Church of Alsóörs

Reformed Church of Alsóörs

One of the special architectural jewels of the Balaton highlands.

The historic predecessor of Alsóörs was originally a village of royal and royal courtiers, storekeepers and cooks. Among its first owners was the Veszprém Chapter, which already owned land here in the early 12th century. In the 13th century, several other owners also appear in Alsóörs, including the nuns of Veszprém-Völgy and vásárhely, the abbey of Bakonybéli, the Premonstratensian monastery of Rátót, the Preposter of Oberörs, the Ancients of Rátót-nembel and the Essegvarians of Lőrinte-nembel. The church of St. Mary in Unterörs, which originally belonged to the parish of Oberörs, is known from the beginning of the 14th century. The first documented Turkish attack on the village and the church was in 1548, caused by a Turkish army ravaging the northern coast. Alsóörs is no longer listed in the parish register of the diocese of Veszprém from 1550. The medieval church is identical with the present Reformed church. The western side was built in the 13th century in Romanesque style, while the tower and walls are partly medieval, dating from the 14th and 15th centuries, and in their present form were built in the late 18th century in Baroque style.
