Óvári Messzelátó

Óvári Messzelátó

The Óvári Messzelató has become one of the symbols of Balatonalmádi, a popular place for excursions, and the view is fabulous.

It is named after Dr. Ferenc Óvári, a lawyer and member of Parliament, who contributed greatly to the construction of the lookout and the railway network in Balatonalmádi. Built around the turn of the century, the lookout originally stood on a red sandstone base covered with larch timber and a parapet with a tiled roof. A devastating storm in 1906 first damaged the parapet, and then caused further damage during World War II. It was rebuilt in 1949, when it was renamed 'Wesselényi Lookout'. In 1991, the roof was reconstructed in a simpler form by the Municipality on the suggestion of the Local History Society, based on old photographs.

In the centre of the panorama of the lookout is the Fűzfői Bay, in the foreground to the left is Vörösberény, which is characterised by its typical churches, the upper one in the Romanesque style (XI-XII century), the lower one in Baroque style and the former Jesuit monastery. Further to the right, the high bank of the Kenese rises from the valley of the Sió, and then the Pannonian hills of Lower Somogy. Behind Fűzfői Bay, Papvásár Hill and Jákó Hill in Berhida rise out of the line, and the factories of Fűzfői can be seen on the left. Above Vörösberény is Megye Hill, and to the west Vár Hill, Vörös Hill and Csere Hill.

In its resolution No. 1/2017 issued on 25 February 2017, the Balatonalmádi City Valuables Committee declared the Óvári Messzelato a municipal asset.
